When am I going to learn that you should never take anything for granted? Or that I should never assume anything, especially when it comes to my wife? I guess, as a man, I will always try to get away with stuff and, as in craps, just roll the dice.

As far as domestic abilities go, you may be surprised to know that I can sew. Not the sewing machine, make-a-dress kind of sew, but sewing on a button, hemming-a-pants kind of sew.

When my mom lived in Japan and before she married my dad, she was a seamstress. In high school, because I didn’t have the patience to wait for her to alter clothes I wanted to wear, I asked her to teach me how to do bachelor survival sewing.

She did, and I’m not ashamed to say that I got pretty good at it.

In fact, it’s come in pretty handy on the occasion when I’ve split my pants or lost a button on my favorite shirt. My wife has knowledge of my skill, so she knows I don’t rely on her to do stuff like hem up my new pants. This is where I get into trouble with taking her for granted.

The other night after a grueling day for both of us, it was nearly midnight and we sat down for the first time all evening. I was ready to hit the sack when my wife remarked that she was exhausted but had to hem up a pair of pants she bought for herself and needed to wear the next day.

Confident that she would turn me down and allow me to go to bed, I asked her, “Do you want me to hem those up for you?” She smiled thankfully and gave me the answer I didn’t expect, “OK, why don’t you hem up one leg and I’ll do the other?”

I was locked in, having already volunteered my services. We ended up racing to see who would finish first and also who would do a better job. I dare to say that I won, and when we finished we just looked at each other and laughed.

I guess I have a pretty good marriage all sewn up.
