Size Really Does Matter

Del.icio.usThis past Father’s Day was probably one of the best I’ve ever had. When else can men eat to their heart’s content, not have to do any work around the house and watch basketball great Dwyane Wade earn an MVP award on TV?
Wait a minute, that’s every day.
Yeah, we men have it pretty good. But as I said, my Father’s Day was an exceptionally great one. It’s mostly because of my wonderful wife and kids. I woke up and was greeted by our two kids, who jumped on the bed with me, Father’s Day cards and gifts in hand.
It reminded me of when my late father came home from Vietnam. We lived in a tiny rented apartment on Pumehana Street. My sister, brother and I shared a bed. I remember our mom waking us up, saying, “Daddy’s home!” We all ran into their bedroom and jumped all over our dad.
Anyway, that’s how the day started, and it ended with a huge feast, compliments of my wife. Father’s Day is one of three days when I can eat like a pig - Thanksgiving and Super Bowl Sunday being the other two. I think my wife was making up for the meal I had the night before.
As a prelude to Father’s Day, she had taken me to one of those fancy restaurants in town. I was starving and looking forward to having a great gourmet meal. Little did I realize that quality over quantity is actually practiced in the dining world.
Trying to preserve some semblance of self-control, I ordered a seared ahi salad. Because of the price, I contemplated receiving a mound of salad with a huge slab of seared ahi on it. When it actually came to the table, it was on a plate no bigger than the tray on which they give you the bill.
It didn’t have salad dressing on it, rather it had salad dressing vapor. My wife laughed and offered me food from her plate, which would mean I’d get half of nearly nothing. The bites of food that I did get were outstanding, which does confirm the quality thing. I actually had some salad left on my plate and asked for an ant bag to take it home.
