Sock It To Me In 2007

Del.icio.usAs an executive of one of the biggest newspapers in Hawaii, I want to know why I can’t find a matching pair of socks when I get dressed in the morning. For all of 2006 I have struggled with this issue, and with the new year I finally decided to do something about it.
I guess the problem starts with the fact that most of my clothes are kept in the garage. I have a wardrobe rack and one of those plastic drawer dressers you can buy at City Mill. Since I have to share my bedroom closet space with a person who shall remain unknown, I basically have to eat it.
My plastic dresser is right next to the washing machine, so one of the drawers has been designated the family socks drawer; well, actually, the socks for me, my 17-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter. In it is a bevy of socks for school, work and play.
For the most part, clean socks are thrown into this “bin,” and while my wife always pairs them together, with three family members rummaging around in there, the socks become disconnected and get thoroughly mixed up.
It’s pretty obvious which socks belong to our daughter because of their size and color, but they just add to the daily shell game of me finding matching pairs.
It also doesn’t help that we have socks in there going back at least five years.
Wanting a new start in 2007, I went to the store and bought enough pairs of black socks and white socks to outfit all the bowlers on Oahu.
I threw out everything in the drawer and neatly loaded in all the new socks. This way, all the black socks matched the black socks and the whites matched the whites.
Proud of my solution, bragging, I turned to my wife and offered to do the same for her undergarment drawers.
Laughing, she said, “Touch it and you’re a dead man.”
