Ron Nagasawa is on leave. This column was published originally in August 2003.
Every once in a great while, my wife gets together with her friends and they have a “girls’ night out” dinner. I actually encourage my wife to do this because I know she has fun and it gives me a night alone with the kids for that all-important “bonding” thing.
What gets me is that my wife acts like I’ve never watched kids by myself before. She talks to me like you would to a new baby sitter: “Do you know what to feed the kids? Are you sure you’re going to be all right? I’ll have my cell phone if you need me.”
I know it’s just a motherly instinct thing, but for crying out loud, I think I can handle the kids. Anyway, I decided that I would take them out to see a movie. We would forgo the nutritious dinner that my wife would normally prepare and instead ingest hot dogs, popcorn, candy and sodas.
My wife knows this to be the case, so before we parted ways she set the ground rules.
“Ron, I don’t care what you feed the kids, but our daughter is absolutely to have no chewing gum.”
I objected, “C’mon honey, she loves chewing gum.”
My wife replied as she kissed the kids and headed for her car, “Yeah, but you don’t have to get it out of her hair.”
So the kids and I are at the theater, and my daughter busts out a full pack of chewing gum. I asked, “Where did you get that?” She flipped her hair and said, “Halloween.”
Since I was being the “cool” parent, I let her chew the gum. When we got home, I noticed she was hiding something. To my horror, she had gum in her beautiful long locks. Panicked, I turned to my son and told him to get on the Internet to find out how to get the gum out.
“Ice, oil and peanut butter!” he yelled, just as I located a pair of scissors. I had our daughter’s hair up in a big, cold, greasy, peanut butter ball, when my wife walked into the house. Our son ran to his room, our daughter started crying, and I looked up and calmly said, “Hi, how was dinner?”
