Talk The Talk, Walk The Walk

Oct. 4, 2005 is a new landmark date for me. It was the first day of my 157th attempt to get in shape. Both my family and my doctor have been encouraging me to take up an exercise program. I finally got to the point physically, where I agreed with them 100 percent.

On that fateful Tuesday, I had my wife wake me up at 5 a.m. - this guy was going walking. I actually felt pretty good putting on my “athletic” shoes and headed out the door with a positive attitude that this was the first step toward fitness.

Nobody told me that I would be literally running a race.

As I exited my neighborhood block, I noticed a figure walking behind me. Suddenly, as though pushing me aside, the figure, a woman, strode past me as though I was in her way.

She looked as though she was my mother’s age, and although I think I heard her utter “Good morning,” it came across in my brain as, “Move over, sumo boy.” We now had it going on, as I picked up my pace in an effort to catch up with her.

No Golden Girl was going to beat me at walking if I could help it.

Still, no matter how much I stepped it up, she seemed to stay ahead of me. She probably walked every morning as was indicated by her tireless and quick gait. I sped up my walk to a jog.

I know that’s not fair, but I had to get ahead of her for my own ego.

Apparently we were on the same course as 45 minutes had gone by and we were approaching my street. I started catching up with her and was about to pass, when she veered right and went down her own street.

I was robbed of my victory.

When I stumbled through the door drenched in sweat, my wife and son looked horrified. Before my wife could dial 911, I offered up an explanation.

Of course, I lied. I told them that some guy wanted to race me the entire way - I think it was Bryan Clay.
