While I earn the most money in our household, I am far from being the richest. That designation would go to our 9-year-old daughter. She is the go-to person in our house for cash. She’s like our private ATM machine.

The reason for that is she squanders the least money and only deals in cash. Christmas and birthdays are like hitting the lottery for her. Of course, she’s also at the age where her baby teeth come out, so the Tooth Fairy is handing out coins to her like a slot machine jackpot.

Her grandma, grandpa and nana are always fronting her cash for being a good girl or sometimes for no reason at all. When we go shopping, she always conveniently leaves her money at home, and she is the master at manipulating her mother and me into paying for her purchases.

Of course, the same holds true for our 17-year-old son, but any money he earns goes straight to taking care of recreation, shopping and dining with his girlfriend. He never has any money.

With all the cash our daughter accumulates, I am the holder of her fortune. There is too much convenience in doing that since I have access, and her mother and I tend to “borrow” in times of need. Recently we have attended a lot of graduation parties. I’m too lazy to run out to get cash for the graduation cards, so I will make a withdrawal.

I have every intention of paying it back - in fact, our daughter keeps accurate mental records of exactly how much I owe. The other day, I decided to take all my spare change to Foodland and run it through the Coinstar machine. It actually ended up being $117 and change.

When I went to the cashier to claim my cash, my daughter held out her hand. She explained a little too loudly, “OK, Dad, now you only owe me 50 more bucks.”
