The Mother Of All Holidays

Mother’s Day has become an absolute science for me as, over the years, if I didn’t come up with an organized plan I’d be dead. This is not the fault of mothers, rather it is a self-imposed, guilt-ridden day of voluntary obligation.
Or maybe non-voluntary. In any case, I feel that men more than women have to worry about this one Sunday of the year when we give thanks to the women who raised us and the women who gave birth to our children. It’s not too much to ask for and I am happy to give them their day.
My wife is the least demanding of anyone when it comes to celebrating Mother’s Day. Certainly she deserves an entire year of the honor, but for herself, she doesn’t make a big deal out of it. That’s my job. The night before Mother’s Day, went went to do a little last-minute shopping. We were actually in Macy’s when I ran into a good friend of ours. She was at the fine jewelry counter, and I asked what she was doing there.
She said she had received her Mother’s Day gift early and had to get something straightened out with the receipt. She held up her hand and there was a diamond ring with stones the size of a Mini Cooper. I gasped, congratulating her and put the ring on the first digit of my finger.
Just then, my wife walked up. Out of instinct, I hid my hand. Out of instinct, she asked what I was hiding. I held up the ring and explained that our friend’s husband had gotten it for her for Mother’s Day. My wife also ogled it and said something like “You go girl!” to our friend.
Our friend’s husband then showed up. Half-joking, I said, “What are you thinking, man? You just set the standard for all Mother’s Day gifts and, frankly, you’re making the rest of us guys look bad!” We all laughed and went our own way, but I was worried about the gift I got my wife.
On Mother’s Day morning, our kids presented their mother with our gift. It was a photo of our two children on a Christmas morning when they were little, and I had it put to canvas. It brought tears to my wife’s eyes. I guess diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but nothing beats a mother’s love for her children.
