The Nana Of The Neighborhood

I believe that I live in the best neighborhood on the island. I don’t mean that we all live in mansions - far from it actually, but our homes are nice and well-kept. Our neighbors are what make it great.

We love it there, and while our house is about 25 years old, we wouldn’t trade it for anywhere else in the world. It’s kind of like George Bailey’s house in the movie, It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s far from perfect as far as houses go, but it’s where my family became a family.

An important part of our household is my mom, or who our kids lovingly refer to as Nana. She’s kind of like the Nana for the whole neighborhood. She is also like the security guard of all the homes on our street, and certainly she is the guardian of our house.

I’m talking about solicitors.

Since my mom is usually home during the day, she has to handle nearly all the door-to-door solicitors that roam the neighborhoods. Of course, if you’re under the age of 12 selling school or sports fund-raisers, then Nana will buy practically anything.

If, however, you’re an adult selling vacuum cleaners or magazine subscriptions, then you’d best avoid our house like the avian flu.

The other week we caught a glimpse of Nana “The Rock” Nagasawa in action. She had come home from the spa through the front door.

She exclaimed, “Those darn guys brought this thing back,” referring to a Halloween decoration on the door. My wife said, “I put that up for the kids.” My mom started laughing uncontrollably. She explained, “Oh no, today two guys came to the door wanting to sell something.

“My English is not so good and I didn’t understand, so I told them to go away. When I looked at the door I saw the decoration and thought they were forcing me to buy it. I yelled at them to take it off the door, that we didn’t want it. I made them leave with it, but they must have brought it back.

“They probably thought I was crazy,” she said.

Don’t worry Ma, maybe you can bust that out after Christmas when decorations have to come down.
