After 23 years of working in Kaneohe, the MidWeek staff has moved to join our colleagues at the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in beautiful downtown Honolulu. We bid all our Luluku Road neighbors a fond farewell as we truly have a new start in the new year.

We’ll miss the folks at Kin Wah Chop Suey and Masa & Joyce’s Okazuya. No more fries from the L & R hole-in-the-wall or fresh flowers from Koolau Farmers. The cheerful greetings from the folks at Island Mini Mart will be no more for us. The Windward City Starbucks may have to switch to serving decaf.

Yes, Kaneohe holds fond memories for all of us. My wife and I got married the same year we moved into the facility, 1987. Both of my kids were born during my tenure there, as were the children of many of our employees.

Of course, there were some sad events as well. There was the first Gulf War and then 9/11. There were tsunami warnings, hurricanes and power outages. Despite that, we always put out a newspaper. Even when we printed the daily Star-Bulletin, we never missed a beat.

We lost a few people to illness and while they were co-workers, we knew them as family. Whether known as the Pali Press, Sun Press or MidWeek, we were part of the local community. We participated in the annual Kaneohe Christmas Parade and held food drives for the Hawaii Foodbank.

But MidWeek is looking forward to the change. We’ve been warmly welcomed by the gang already at the Restaurant Row offices. No longer separated by the Koolaus, we are a whole ohana again. And we’re ready to do an even better job for all our customers and readers.

So have a wonderful new year. I know we will.
