The Things We Do For Good Luck

Most people don’t know this, but I have something in common with some of the best athletes in the world. Before you actually laugh out loud, let me tell you that the trait I share with these world-class competitors is that I am totally superstitious.
I hate to admit it because on the surface I think I appear to be a no-nonsense kind of guy. The truth is, I’m worse than our local senior citizens, who when in Las Vegas line the tops of their slot machines with all their lucky frogs.
Yeah, unfortunately for me, my lucky charm isn’t quite so inconspicuous. The item through which I channel all the luck in the universe is a 20-year-old T-shirt from the Top Hat Bar in Wahiawa.
Not that I’m a frequent customer, mind you, but I have many experiences attached to it.
I guess you could argue that since I have a limited wardrobe - like three favorite T-shirts - it’s no wonder that a great percentage of my luck occurs while wearing one of them. Something about the Top Hat shirt however, has distinguished it as my lucky shirt.
I wore it on the day I asked my wife out on our first date. I also wore it on the days my son and my daughter were born. There were also various sporting events at which I came out ahead for wearing it.
Anyway, the other week, I needed my lucky shirt for work.
We were going through an audit, so I decided I would wear it under my dress shirt. On the morning of our audit, I went to my drawer, but my lucky shirt was nowhere to be found. I started panicking and ran through our house like a maniac.
Just before my wife was going to dial “911,” I remembered putting out shirts for a Big Brothers, Big Sisters donation pickup. I tore open the bag and, sure enough, good old Top Hat was in there.
I think the reason I found it was because I was wearing my lucky underwear, but that’s a whole ‘nother story.
