Time Well Spent

Del.icio.usOK, I’m back from vacation, if you want to call it that. What I mean is that it wasn’t a vacation in the true sense of the word as I did quite a bit of work at home. I basically tried to catch up on all the stuff I’d put off doing for years - say about 14 years, to be exact.
That’s when we bought the house and, believe me, in that many years the tasks can certainly pile up, especially for an unskilled handyman like myself. Of course, for the bigger jobs like replacing our roof, I had to lay out the cash for the pros to do it.
Had I attempted to undertake such a task, I’m sure my wife would have done anything to convince me otherwise. Still, I managed to accomplish many things. I painted, I changed out all the hardware on our interior doors, replaced our bathroom sink and unclogged our plumbing.
I detailed my mom’s car, replaced hard-to-reach bulbs, helped my kid brother mount an LCD TV, and put up a window shade in our family room. Surprisingly, I did all that with minimal collateral damage that normally occurs whenever I try to do things.
If there was any real downside to it, it was that I was home all day, every day, with my wife. For me it was a treat, but I think by the second week I was starting get on her nerves. I think the problem was that she wasn’t used to having me around, and that interrupted her daily schedule.
Actually, I think you know it by a more accurate name,“baby-sitting.” The irritation became apparent one day when we went to the store so I could buy some jeans. My wife tried on a top and asked me if I liked it on her.
Before I could say anything, she stormed off to the dressing room. I asked what happened and she replied, “You don’t like it because it makes me look fat.” I defended myself saying, “But I didn’t say anything.” She retorted, “I could tell by the look on your face.”
Well, I’m back at work now and our home life has returned to storybook status. Gee, I can’t wait until I retire.
