TV Pass Interference

One of the worst weeks of my year has always been the weekend between the National Football League conference championships and the Super Bowl.

And I don’t think I’m alone, as probably millions of football fans go through withdrawal with virtually no professional football to watch on TV.

While my wife likes to watch football, in moderation, I think all the Sundays where I’m glued to the TV and remote control take a toll on her patience. I tell her that I can’t help it, that it’s really an addiction and I need serious help.

But she’s on to the fact that it also seems to be my excuse to eat junk and drink beer. So on the weekend where football goes dark, my wife insists that I owe it to her to watch the shows she wants to watch. I accommodate her as much as possible so that I’m free and clear for the Super Bowl.

This year, however, during the gridiron lull on TV, she insisted that I watch the U.S. Women’s Figure Skating Championships with her. I would actually rather stick a hot poker in my eye, but in marriage, you must be willing to sacrifice.

I honestly tried to make the best of it by converting my viewing of the skating into practice for my viewing of Super Bowl XLIII.

So at the onset, I picked one of the skaters to be “my team.” She would be the one for whom I rooted throughout the competition.

I was really getting into it until in the short program and “my team” got a low score.

That’s when I stood up and actually shouted at the TV, “That’s bullcrap!” I wanted a review of the play and threw out a challenge against the ref’s call.

I saw my wife looking at me, which brought me back into reality.

I don’t know if she was happy because I was getting into the skating or mad because I was applying football-watching habits to the event. Either way, I was just trying to get through it with a minimum amount of mind-numbing boredom.

In the end, my skater didn’t win, but I think she covered the point spread. I’m worried, though, because between the Super Bowl and the Pro Bowl, my wife indicated she wanted to watch a Joy of Crafting marathon on OC-16.
