Del.icio.usI am totally serious when I say that some prominent researcher or university should study the social behavior of women and their husbands who are in the process of purchasing a Christmas tree. The reason I say this is because there needs to be a cure for the incessant aggressive behavior.
At first I thought it was just my wife and her annual pursuit of the perfect Christmas tree. While certainly she does not find that to be the most important thing of the season, when she’s keyed in on that mission, she becomes a gladiator.
And she’s not alone. On the weekend after Thanksgiving, we decided to check out Christmas trees because, for some reason, my wife believes that all the good trees are snatched up by the time the first day of December rolls around - either that, or suppliers will run out of trees. It’s the dock strike/toilet paper mentality, or something like it.
Anyway, we were standing in a long line of what looked like married couples who were waiting their turn to have the tree lot attendant pull out trees from the shipping container.
Looking at the couples in front and in back of us in line was like looking in a mirror at my wife and me. One couple came up from the side and tried to jump ahead of everyone in the line. Suddenly, my wife and the other women became an ugly mob.
I and the other husbands, in the meantime, turned into Don Knotts. We were trying to “shush” our wives, but they would-n’t have it. No one was going to get in front of the line without going through the tree gauntlet. We ended up with a great tree, but all I know is if I ever get into some kind of battle, I want these women riding shotgun.

On a greatly more somber note, I wanted to put out the website for the Officer Down Memorial Page, which currently includes a way to offer reflections in memory of HPD officer Steve Favela. The jobs that the members of HPD do are thankless, and when one loses his/her life in the line of duty, it is especially hard on family, colleagues and friends:
An account has been set up for Officer Favela and his wife’s four children.
Contributions may be dropped off at any branch of First Hawaiian Bank. Checks should be made out to “Friends of Steve Favela.”
