Unmasking A Scary Situation

Del.icio.usHalloween could very well be one of my most favorite times of the year. I’m talking about commercial Halloween - costumes, candy and trick-or-treat. Of course, since we have a 9-year-old daughter, it makes it all that much more fun.
As usual, my wife is immersed in the festivities, what with putting together our daughter’s costume and assembling treats for her classmates and the neighboring trick-or-treaters. She puts up the decorations and I am in charge of carving the pumpkins.
Our 17-year-old son also is still into it, as he puts on a costume to greet the kids at our door. I too welcome the kids who are trick-or-treating along with their escorts - parents, older siblings, aunts, uncles or grandparents.
The younger kids are pretty cute and I like to make a big deal of their costumes. It’s pretty amazing the extent to which parents will go for these elaborate costumes. After all, I should know, with all my wife has done for our kids each Halloween.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that the adults escorting their kids also get into the “spirit” and don costumes as well. Of course, you should never assume anything, and this Halloween, while passing out candy, I had a pretty good scare.
The cutest little fairy princess came to our door. I exclaimed loudly how beautiful she was and that she was lucky to have her fairy grandmother taking her around. The fairy grandmother interrupted me, saying in an indignant tone, “I’m not her grandmother, I’m her mother.”
Placing my foot in my mouth for a second time, I responded, “Wow, that’s an amazing costume, then.” She again replied, “I’m not wearing a costume.” That pretty much ended the greeting of trick-or-treaters for me that night.
I had to stop - I gave that little girl every last piece of candy we had.
