WCC Has John Young Grants

Del.icio.usDeadline is Saturday to apply for Windward Community College’s two $2,000 John Young Scholarships available for visual and performing arts students.
WCC art professor Paul Nash, who began the dialogue with the John Young Foundation, believes the grants enable needy students to relax and be more creative.
“I think it gives students a unique opportunity in the sense that they don’t have to be concerned or stressed with financial needs,” he said.“The majority of students are concerned with finances, and they may have family concerns to take care of as well. The scholarship takes that kind of anxiety away from students so they can concentrate on their art.”
A scholarship student himself once, Nash said it helps a lot in all areas, including self-esteem.
The need-based scholarship is given to those committed to a career in art. Illustrator Mark “Boots” Lupenui won last year’s award, which honors the renowned self-taught painter and his wish to support students. Young was also an art collector who shared his collection with the Honolulu Academy of Arts and to the John Young Museum at UH-Manoa.
“He set it up before he died to give some students a shot at doing what they believe in and some moral support to follow their dreams,” said daughter Debbie Young, a foundation trustee.
