The Origin of LASIK Laser Vision Correction

First RK (Radial Keratotomy) was developed in the 1970’s in Russia. A Dr. was treating a young boy who had cut his eye after falling and breaking his glasses. The damage was superficial and had simply shaved a layer off of the outer surface of the eye. The boy who was previously very myopic (nearsighted), had improved vision in that eye. Dr. Fyodorov was intrigued and studied the matter and later published his discoveries. Dr. Leo Bores brought the procedure to the U.S. after witnessing it performed in the former U.S.S.R. The American doctors, with adequate funding, begin serious research and development of the procedure. Though imprecise and not always a success, over 2 million people had RK surgery performed before 1978 when Dr. Steven Trokel, an ophthalmologist, first used a laser on the cornea, and realized the potential of eye surgery coupled with the Excimer laser. After many years of development and FDA studies, laser vision correction was finally FDA approved first in 1995 for PRK (Photo-refractive Keratectomy) then later LASIK (Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) in 1998. Now with the use of the IntraLase^TM blade free all laser LASIK system, we can now offer 98% of candidates a chance to have safe and accurate laser vision correction. Each year, thousands of patients undergo the LASIK procedure in the United States alone. The FDA reports that LASIK surgery complications occur in less than 2% of cases. The FDA has also approved LASIK for NASA astronauts and Military fighter pilots.
