Tribute to Older American Month * May 2009 President John F. Kennedy designated May 1963 as Senior Citizens Month, encouraging the nation to honor seniors nationwide. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter changed the name to Older Americans Month, a time to celebrate those 65 and older through events and public recognition.

This year, the theme for Older Americans Month is living today for a better tomorrow reflecting the Administration on Aging’s focus on healthy aging. Percy Ihara a reverse mortgage specialist and a senior advocate, would like to do his part by connecting seniors with resources available to help them maintain their quality of life as they age.

TIPS FOR LIVING BETTER IN YOUR HOME:

Overwhelmingly seniors want to remain in their homes for as long as possible, but may lack the awareness that makes prolonged independent living possible. Consumer surveys and other research have consistently reported that the majority of seniors wish to remain in their homes throughout retirement.

According to the National Aging in Place Council, many innovative solutions are available to help older adults make aging in place a safe and comfortable experience. Below is a list of indoor and outdoor projects and modifications of varying scope that may either fit your needs or stimulate ideas for other ways to improve your home and your quality of life. These ideas can be explored in greater detail and with illustrations at www.naipc.org.

Our homes become increasingly important to us as we advance in age. Many seniors have benefited from a reverse mortgage by having the funds to comfortably, safely and independently age in place.

Here’s to you, for living today for a better tomorrow!
