Trump 2.0

Raised frugally and put to work at an early age by his famous father so he’d learn the value of a dollar, Donald Trump Jr. is now a vice president in his father’s company, and very involved in the new Trump International Waikiki hotel, which opens at Beach Walk this week

Donald Trump Jr. is grateful his famous father put him to work doing blue-collar jobs and learning the value of a buck At just 31 years old, Donald Trump Jr., who serves as an executive vice president at The Trump Organization, has a position that many well-educated, hardworking business men and women work their whole lives to achieve.

But don’t think it was just handed to him. Trump Jr. earned his title, and inarguably is more than qualified for the job.

And he’s not the only one following in his famous father’s footsteps. Sister Ivanka and brother Eric also have joined The Trump Organization, working together to expand the company’s real estate, retail, commercial, hotel and golf interests nationally and internationally.

The three Trump siblings are expected to be in Hawaii this week for the opening of one of their latest developments, the Trump International Hotel & Tower Waikiki Beach Walk. It’s not confirmed that Trump Sr. will be able to make it, as he’s currently filming The Apprentice.

“It’s been a phenomenal project thus far,” says Trump Jr. “There’s really nothing like it (in Hawaii), so we’re excited to do what we always do and what we always try to accomplish, which is introduce the best building in any given market that we enter. We have that in location. We have that with the unobstructed views. And I think we certainly have that with our hotel management.”

The 38-story luxurious Trump International Hotel & Tower Waikiki Beach Walk is located at 223 Saratoga Road and features 464 spacious rooms and suites. The first guests are scheduled to arrive Nov. 16 with special introductory rates starting at $255 per night for studio accommodations and ranging upward to $8,000 for a spectacular penthouse suite.

Trump Jr. says he has been very involved with the Waikiki project from the beginning and has toured the building on numerous occasions. He’s also vacationed in Hawaii more times than he can remember throughout his life.

All in the family: Donald Jr., Donald, Ivanka and Eric

“I’m a big scuba diver, so I’ve had some great diving at some of the Islands,” he says. “I’m also a big fisherman. I’m much more outdoorsy than you would think for a kid from New York. I like doing all those adventure sports, and you have some great diversity here - not just the beaches but the mountains. And now that I have a good excuse to get here more often, I look forward to getting my kids here and doing a little bit more family activities.”

Trump Jr. and wife Vanessa Haydon have a 2-year-old daughter Kai Madison and an 8-month-old son Donald John Trump III. And no, Kai was not named for the ocean as the Hawaiians would define it, but rather after Haydon’s grandfather, who was a Danish musician.

“Kai is incredible but also going through her terrible 2’s,” says Trump Jr. “She was like an angel, and then one day her default answer for anything was ‘no.’ She’s tough, but if you’re going to have a kid, I’d rather them be a little too tough than a little too weak, so I’m not going to complain.”

As for how Trump Sr. rates in his role as grandpa, the answer is “surprisingly very good.”

“He’s great with Kai,” says Trump Jr., quickly adding that Kai’s uncle Barron (Trump Sr.‘s son with supermodel wife Melania Trump) is only 3. “Kai really actually likes him. There are times when she’s around and she’ll make him carry her around when we’re touring one of the houses we’re building or whatever it may be, and she points out the stuff that he’s pointing to.
