The Buzz Is All Good In Kailua

Don’t take your credit card to Buzz’s Original Steakhouse. They don’t accept ‘em. Even President Bill Clinton had to shell out cash for his dinner.

Bobby Lou and Kaleo: Life at Kailua beach is good

The rest are “deceivers,” says a long-time patron.

Daughter Kaleo Schneider manages Buzz’s two restaurants today, with mom Bobby Lou and husband Stan Yeackel acting as the “quality control team.” Her daughter Tahiti Huetter is also involved.

Her mother says, “When things are good, I look for things we can do better.”

“Whenever they’re in town, I cringe,” admits Schneider, who has her mother’s personable spirit.

“We’ve kept high standards over the years. We still cut our own meat. We don’t buy anything ready-made; our dressings and sauces are made from scratch, which is a lost art in many restaurants today.”

“My problem with restaurants reviews is that we don’t get credit for what we do,” Bobby Lou says.

“They say we’ve been here a long time, and we’re successful because we’re on the beach with a nice ambiance. They don’t say we do anything good.”

She ordered Ahi Ceviche and Calamari Steak appetizer from the kitchen. The ceviche was cool and crisp with fresh cubes of ahi tuna enhanced by citrus, bits of mango, avocado, mint, and cilantro. The calamari filet-“no squiggly things”- was lightly breaded, nicely fried, and paired with a tasty beurre blanc (white butter) sauce.

We applauded those dishes, and also praised the Scampi Salad and kiawe charcoal broiled burgers with tempura fries.

As the Food Network might declare, those dishes are “money.”

Schneider reminds us that’s not the only thing that’s “green” at Buzz’s.

The young restaurateur insists that operations be energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Paper products, straws and takeout containers are biodegradable.

As an anniversary gesture, Buzz’s will give away reusable shopping bags to discourage plastic bags as a lifestyle choice.

Each year, the restaurant publishes a moon calendar featuring the work of a local artist.

The 2008 calendar has a scenic Pali landscape by Gary Reed. Proceeds of calendar sales go to the Hawaii Foodbank.

All of this aloha in hosting people, giving them a respite from their busy lives and sending them home satiated have spurred Buzz’s Original Steakhouse to fame and fortune. Family members have continued the Buzz’s tradition of good food, value, and island-style cordiality.

This gives the Yeackels time to have dual residences in Lanikai and Bainbridge, Wash., plus keep up their tans on the golf course. Bobby Lou has turned in many championship scorecards, with several holes in one, at Oahu Country Club.

Fortunately, the restaurant is aces too.

And it seems the positive buzz will continue for many more years to come as regular folks and celebrities find their way to this kitschy and characteristic Kailua landmark. Even if they don’t take credit cards.
