He’s every dog’s best friend. And every dog owner’s too. Cesar Millan, aka the Dog Whisperer, is world-renowned for his amazing ability to bring balance between people and their dogs, and for his growing celebrity clientele.

And now local dog lovers and fans of his TV show Dog Whisperer can meet the famed dog psychologist in person at a dog behavior seminar on Saturday, Oct. 14, in the McKinley High School auditorium.

“The workshop is to bring awareness to people and to teach people how to improve their connection with their dogs from a natural point of view,” says Millan, who has worked with stars Jada Pinkett-Smith and husband Will Smith, Patti Labelle, Scarlett Johansson, Hillary Duff, Daisy Fuentes, Denise Richards, Oprah and others. “I teach them to be more aware of the importance of exercise, discipline and affection, in that order. Most people do affection, affection, affection, but affection alone is not going make (the dog) balanced. Exercise, discipline and then affection creates a great state of mind.

“For example, dogs who live with handicapped people, people with disabilities, the dog and the human are extremely connected because the human practices exercise and discipline every day. Not just affection. The dog that lives with a human with disabilities is more balanced than a dog who lives with a human with no disabilities. They don’t misbehave.”

Described as the Super Nanny for dog owners or the Dr. Phil for dogs, Millan follows a “Power of the Pack” mentality, advising dog owners to be calm, assertive pack leaders in the dog world.

“The dog’s psychology is not to become submissive to an emotional pack leader or a spiritual pack leader, it’s to an instinctual pack leader, and that’s awareness,” says Millan.

Millan is not a dog trainer, but rather a dog behavior expert - “rehabilitating unbalanced dogs and re-training their owners to better understand how to see the world through a dog’s eyes.”

He doesn’t believe in hitting or yelling at a dog to correct unwanted behavior. Instead, he says that people need to calmly, assertively and consistently give their dogs rules, boundaries and limitations in order to establish themselves as solid pack leaders and to help correct and control unwanted behavior.

“Anybody who doesn’t have 100 percent connection with their dog could be my client,” says Millan, 36. “People come to me for various reasons, they come because their dog is very aggressive or nervous. My expertise is aggressive state of mind, but it can be an insecure dog, or it can be a dog who just doesn’t listen to the human.”

And whoever said you can never teach an old dog new tricks never met the Dog Whisperer. As witnessed by millions of viewers on the Oprah show, Millan surprised the talk show host when he rehabilitated her 11-year-old cocker spaniel named Sophie to be around other dogs.

“That is something that people get kind of blown away with,” admits Millan about working with older dogs. “Sophie, for 11 years, could not be around dogs. We all know Oprah loves Sophie, but her energy could influence Sophie to attack because when she was around other dogs she became afraid. My energy influenced her to be social. My calm,
