At the annual Sony Expo of the company’s new products this weekend, the biggest buzz will be for the PlayStation 3. Sony’s head of computer gaming talks about it, and MidWeek’s Click Chick is the first to try it out

American culture. Bringing this knowledge to Sony, he quickly ascended the ladder, becoming the head of Sony Music’s IBA office before transferring to the computer world in 1995.

Over the past decade Hirai led the way into the new age of computer gaming as it went from a throwaway gimmick for the kids to the $6.4 billion industry it is today.

He has always had a passion for games, though when he was a kid they were more of the board variety.


But even now at 42, he still gets a charge out of trying them out, mostly with his 12-year-old son Kenji, in what he calls “consumer testing in the home.”

“I’ll pick up a game here or there, fire it up for an hour or so,” says Hirai, who prefers racing games like Gran Turismo.

“I wish I could spend more time playing these wonderful games, but there are just not enough hours in the day. But I am in the lucky position that even if I am testing out a game, I can say that I am doing it because it’s my job, as opposed to I am taking time off from what I should really be doing.”
