Kilani Bakery will celebrate its 50th anniversary of serving hungry Wahiawa customers on Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“It’s a small way to thank our customers,” said Dawn Takara, daughter-in-law of owners Walter and Beatrice Takara. There will be tasty refreshments, popcorn and cotton candy.

“From what we found out, Aug. 16 is the actual date they opened the bakery 50 years ago,” added Takara.“And it works out that the day is a Sunday as well.”

Known especially for its brownies, along with its custard pies and long johns, Takara said the bakery has survived and succeeded because it keeps things simple.

“We stay with what works, and customers like that. Everything is made from scratch. We’ve weathered all the storms. We have a really good base of customers. We consider ourselves very fortunate to be where we are today.”

(“Where we are today” is 704 Kilani Ave.)

Takara is married to Jeffrey, one of the owners’ two sons. Both Jeffrey and his brother Sidney work in the bakery full time along with their father. Their sister Pamela helps out during the holidays.

“We want people to come out and help us celebrate,” said Takara.

Kilani Bakery is open daily from 4:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 621-5662.
