In response to the death of Grineline “Elaine” James and her 7-year-old son in their Mililani Mauka home, members of the Filipino community have set up a memorial account at First Hawaiian Bank to send the whole family home to the Philippines for burial.

The two were found dead July 2, along with James’ husband Michael, who is believed to have slain them before killing himself for reasons still unclear.

“I am aware that Elaine’s mom and her siblings in the Philippines want Elaine to be brought back to the Philippines as well as her son, Michael James II,” said her friend Esther Pascual. “At this time, a wake service is pending, as well as the transfer for Elaine and her son to the Philippines. Of course, we need to raise funds to make this happen.”

“We’re about $8,000 short at this point,” said state Rep. John Mizuno on July 17, noting that the family has collected about $1,600 so far. “We’re optimistic we can get the family back out to the Philippines for burial.”

Mizuno said he has spoken to both Michael and Elaine James’ families, who are currently here, and both have agreed to the plan.

The Kalihi legislator is acting as the voice for the families, since they prefer privacy at this time.

“If anyone would like to make a donation, it would help,” he added. “The members of both families would like to thank the people of Hawaii for their kind support as they try to heal and move toward closure.”

Donations to the memorial fund are welcome at any First Hawaiian Bank branch, and checks should be made out to “Friends of Grineline and Michael James II.”
