Many Wahiawa residents are wondering when California Avenue will be repaved following the installation of water lines along the main road more than two years ago.

According to the Wahiawa Neighborhood Board, the project went over schedule and caused many complaints about the condition of the road. Design work for the project started in late 2008.

“They (city Department of Transportation Services) still haven’t paved it,” said board vice chairman Joe Francher. “The road is bumpy, and many cars have been damaged because of it - axle damage, tire damage, etc.

“Because California Avenue is a main road and is in poor condition, many people are starting to take the back roads, which increase traffic, and drivers are going over the speed limit. There also are no sidewalks, so it’s dangerous for pedestrians.”

The board hopes someone from the city Department of Design and Construction will attend an upcoming meeting and respond to the issue.

Sharon Thom, deputy director for DTS, called it a full reconstruction project. “The design part of the project takes a year or more to complete, and the project is set to go out for bid in April.

“We’ll start work as soon as possible,” she added.
