It’s not exactly the Second Coming, but the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii is deep into its second major renovation of Camp Mokuleia. The goal is to have all facilities at the old North Shore camp repaired, painted and glowing in time to host a national conference of church camp directors in January.

“By the end of the year, we want to get everything in place,” said camp board president Bill Lucas, noting that the diocese has spent close to $1 million in the past few years toward that goal. The camp is understandably weary, he explained, after serving three generations of 15,000 adults and youths annually for 60 years.

“It’s pretty much rehabilitated. We hope in this nasty economic climate to be a real asset to the community and offer a nice facility with the best beach and scenery of any camp in the state.”

Upgrades are nothing new,but the playing field is. Lucas appealed to the North Shore Neighborhood Board in May to support a crosswalk for an activities field they plan to construct on a 10-acre parcel across Farrington Highway from the camp, next to Dillingham airfield.

“Ideally, we want a regulation field for soccer, football and other sports activities for campers,” he said. “But we also need that crosswalk. Unfortunately, the state Department of Transportation says we don’t need it.

“But the horses have one for their polo field, and Camp Erdman has one, too.

“People drive by too quickly there.”

The Wahiawa born-and-raised Lucas knows all there is to know about Camp Mokuleia. He’s been involved for 55 years, ever since his father was the camp doctor. And since the diocese took back management of the camp in 2001, he and others have logged uncounted volunteer hours for the cause, including grant-writing.

“The place was a mess when we started,” he admitted.“We’re halfway funded at the moment. We have $31,000, and we need $70,000 to $80,000 to bring it to a good state of repair.” Among the ongoing projects are the interior and exterior of the lodge, the dining room and all 16 bedrooms. Thanks to Actus Lend Lease, the office has been restored - after it was crushed by a tree.
