Haleiwa Farmers Market will celebrate the transformative power of cacao — from colorful pod to delectable taste sensation — with a Hawaii Cacao Festival from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 31 during its regular market of more than 50 vendor booths.

The event features a contest for the best original chocolate recipe, a shuttle tour of the Waialua Estate Cacao Orchard, presentations on cacao’s health benefits from Ola Loa Wellness and tips on making your own chocolate liqueur from Skipp Bittenbender of the UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. Cacao trees will be on sale from the Urban Garden Center, and keiki can decorate Mr. Cacao Heads, have their faces painted and make crowns for themselves as festival royalty.

Judges for the recipe contest include state Rep. Michael Magaoay, radio and TV personality Howard Dicus, freelance food writer Martha Cheng, cookie-man Wally Amos and Hawaii chocolatier Melanie Boudar. Prizes will be awarded for the best Baked Goods, Confections, Savory and Keiki Creation, plus the Hawaiian-Chocolate Grand Prize for the most outstanding recipe in all categories using local chocolate.

Prizes include an Escape Club membership from Turtle Bay Resort for the grown-ups and a private surf lesson from North Shore Surf Girls for the keiki.

Visitors can also sample the creations from Town Restaurant chef Ed Kenney and 21 Degrees North chef John Armstrong.

For more information, call 388-9696 or visit http://www.haleiwafarmersmarket.com.

The market sets up every Sunday at the corner of Kamehameha Highway and Leong Bypass near Haleiwa Beach Park.
