Dedicated to making Hawaii’s beaches accessible to all abilities, AccesSurf Hawaii recently donated a Mobi-Mat (access pathway) and Tiralo Beach Wheelchair for public use at Haleiwa’s Ali’i Beach Park.

The donation was part of a “On Land, On Sand And In The Sea” event put forth by the city Department of Parks and Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation Unit and AccesSurf Hawaii. The program’s intent is to promote awareness, beach access, surfing and activities for people of all ability levels.

“We’re very appreciative for these generous gifts that will help disabled people enjoy a beautiful beach that we all love,” said Mayor Mufi Hannemann.

The Tiralo Wheelchair allows for easy and stable use on sand and in the water. It moves easily on soft sand and floats like a boat. The Mobi-Mat is designed to assist those who have trouble entering the ocean because of the sand or other uneven surfaces. The mats are made of recycled rubber or wood/plastic grade composite that enable those with wheelchairs, walkers or crutches to get to the water.

AccesSurf Hawaii is partnering with the city parks staff to expand accessible paths at beaches throughout Hawaii. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to empowering people with disabilities by providing access to the ocean through adaptive surfing, flotation equipment, beach wheelchairs and mats.
