For those who don’t like pine needles scattered across their living room floor, an island Norfolk pine tree could be the perfect pick this holiday season, and Helemano Farms still has about 8,000 of them.

One of Hawaii’s few tree farms, and its largest, the 20-acre spread in Wahiawa has them ready to be cut, wrapped, loaded and decorated. The fresh-cut trees range in size from 3 to 20 feet tall.

“We are selling about 20 to 25 trees per day right now, but that’s even without any advertising,” said owner Aaron O’Brien last week. “So I expect it to pick up this weekend.” The family is carrying on a dream of Aaron’s dad, a former Dole plantation manager who established the farm in 2003 but died before seeing it to fruition.

Cost for each tree is $30 for up to 6 feet tall, $40 for 6 to 7 feet, $50 for 7 to 8 feet, and $10 for each additional foot over 8 feet. The price includes cutting, netting and loading. Only cash is accepted, and delivery is available only for large orders.

Open hours on weekdays are 2 p.m. until sundown, and weekends from 10 a.m. to sundown.

Helemano Farms also gives trees to bona fide charities. Thus far the stately island-grown trees have cheered the Boys and Girls Club, Heart Gallery (supporting foster families), and the Lokahi Giving Project. Non-profit groups interested in the trees may contact the farm at 622-4287. They should bring proof of their non-profit designation.

Helemano Farms is located at the end of Whitmore Avenue. Directions and more information are available on the tree farm website at www.helemanofarms.com
