Library Counts On Book Sale In Tough Times

Del.icio.usStaging its first book sale in a long time, the Friends of Mililani Library hopes to part with plenty of books, DVDs and CDs on Oct. 3.
The sale will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the library and feature a special collection of autographed books.
General budget cuts to the library system statewide have made fundraisers like this one especially vital, said branch manager Wendi Woodstrup. Mililani, for example, has unfilled adult and children’s librarian positions, and depends on the Friends’ help for programs and materials.
According to Alice Rogers of the Friends, the sale also requires volunteers who can help move heavy tables and boxes, display books, sell, cashier and clean up. Easy set-up tents and chairs also would be appreciated. To offer help, call Rogers at 626-7292 or leave your name and number at the library desk.
The nonprofit group hopes to boost its membership as well, said Rogers, who signed up as soon as she moved here from Nevada. “I’m a big reader,” she explained. “I’ve read hundreds and thousands of books. Igave away 6,000 of them before I moved, and I still have plenty here to give to the library.”
Money also is accepted. Just make checks out to Friends of Mililani Library along with a completed membership application. Woodstrup added that donation envelopes are available for the statewide library fund, and contributions may also be designated to individual branches.
On a positive note, Walmart Foundation just awarded a $1,500 grant to Mililani Library to cover expenses incurred from a June break-in.
