Folks who fret about visiting Mililani Library because of parking issues will soon have reason to rejoice. The library is in the process of increasing its number of stalls from 35 to 70.

The current lot and book drop will remain open, along with normal business hours, during construction, which began earlier this month and should be finished by the the end of the year.

“That’s of course assuming it doesn’t rain, because that would hamper construction,” said acting branch manager Shari-Lynn Murphy, adding that “the parking lot has been too small for a long time. It didn’t grow with the community.” The library opened in 1984.

The project also calls for adding an entrance and exit out of Meheula Parkway - an improvement Murphy regards as “a minor miracle” to get approved. She credits state Rep. Marilyn Lee’s persistence in pushing for the expansion and improvements over the past couple of years.

Henry’s Equipment Rental and Sales Inc. is lead contractor for the $400,000 job.

With parking improvements in order, Murphy hopes to supplement the library’s human resources. “We are understaffed for our volume of business,” she admitted. “The system is currently doing open recruitment, and we haven’t done that in a couple of years because of the hiring freeze.

“We’re hoping to reach the light at the end of the tunnel sometime this fiscal year.”
