A no-kill dog rescue organization has made it its mission to eliminate Hawaii’s homeless dog population through education and adoption - and much of their work occurs in Mililani Mauka.

“We express the importance of spay and neutering control of the animal population,” said Hawaii Dog Foundation president Stephanie Ryan. “We have a huge problem in Hawaii with people moving away and leaving their animals.”

At any given time, the foundation has about 40 to 50 dogs ready for adoption. As Ryan explained, the process is possible only because about 40 foster families are willing to take in the dogs until they are adopted.

Among HDF’s “meet-and-greet"locations is Mililani Mauka Dog Park, where families can come and look for the perfect canine companion. The Meet-and-Greets are held from noon to 2 p.m. every other Saturday. The next Mililani visits are scheduled Jan. 31, Feb. 7 and Feb. 21.

“Mililani Mauka is a really convenient and dog-friendly environment,” said Ryan.“We bring about 15 to 20 dogs. Usually people have already seen the dogs on the website and they come down to meet them.”

The adoption involves a screening process with an application, interview and a sleepover trial period. If everything goes well, the adoption can be finalized. Fee is $150 to adopt an adult dog and $200 for puppies.

“Our foundation really relies on private donations because with each adoption we spay or neuter, (install a) microchip and provide two sets of shots - so the charge doesn’t come close to covering the costs.”
