Wahiawa has an Extreme Makeover planned for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, billed as a community-wide effort to beautify the town by ridding it of unsightly junk, painting over vandalized walls and creating a fund from the recycling to halt future graffiti.

The Lions Club will coordinate the makeover from the civic center parking lot at 900 California Ave., while the Rotarians will send trucks around town to pick up recyclables. The Boys and Girls Club also will volunteer with the Rotary Club. To offer help or request a pick-up, call Joe Francher at 778-8270 or Rene Mansho of Schnitzer Steel at 306-1876.

Wanted items are car parts, bicycles, washers, stoves, scrap metal, newspaper, cardboard, beverage containers, tires, cooking oil, used eyeglasses, hearing aids, green waste, batteries, usable clothing and household items, cell phones, printer cartridges, phone books, magazines, passenger tires (four per household) and computers (one per car). No TV sets or microwaves will be accepted.

“Most of the anti-graffiti work will be done on private property to get the graffiti off the walls,” said volunteer Jack Kampfer. Paint-out volunteers should meet at the police station.

The long list of local helping hands for the makeover includes state and city agencies, lawmakers Robert Bunda, Marcus Oshiro and Donovan Dela Cruz; Leilehua High School and its Leo and Lettermen’s clubs, Soroptimists of Central Oahu, Wahiawa churches, Wahiawa Community and Business Association, Zonta Club of
