Surfrider Foundation plans a big mahalo for those who help protect and enhance Oahu’s coastal communities at its annual John Kelly Environmental Awards from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Waimea Valley Pavilion.

Champion bodysurfer Mark Cunningham will receive the Lifetime Achievement award for his leadership and dedication to Defend Oahu Coalition and the Junior Lifeguard Program. The foundation also will present its Professional Surfer award to world-class waterman Duane DeSoto to honor his work as founder/president of Na Kama Kai, which trains keiki in ocean awareness.

Former winners and surfing legends such as Peter Cole and Randy Rarick will attend, along with entertainers Paula Fuga, Jive Nene and Rob Barreca, who will play on solar-powered equipment courtesy of Sunetric.

Tickets for the dinner and silent auction cost $50 at the door or $40 in advance (via surfrider.org/oahu). Proceeds will benefit Surfrider’s Oahu chapter.

“The event honors ocean lovers and environmental leaders who have followed in John Kelly’s footsteps,” explained Hawaii coordinator Stuart Coleman. Kelly, who founded Save Our Surf, died at age 88 in 2007.

The party continues on Sunday with a beach cleanup from 10 a.m. to noon at Haleiwa Beach Park, where Everpaddle will have stand-up paddle boards to help clear plastic debris from the ocean and First Wind will provide lunch afterward.
