A Mililani social studies teacher has been singled out by the Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club chains for special honors - and money - as its Hawaii Teacher of the Year for 2007.

In a surprise move Oct. 24, Mililani store manager Earl Cressman arrived at the school to present Amy Perruso with an educational grant of $10,000 from the Wal-Mart Foundation for “going the extra mile for her students and instilling a love of learning long after graduation.”

Perruso has been going that extra mile in the classroom for seven years at MHS, where she also coaches the mock trial team, coordinates History Day and voluntarily teaches a 7 a.m. AP class that didn’t fit into the master schedule. Perruso also is assisting the state Department of Education in developing training for political studies in Hawaiian history. She has traveled extensively, is fluent in several languages and is the mother of a 2-year-old daughter.

“Amy is dedicated, energetic and a pleasure to have here,” said MHS principal John Brummel.“The kids love her, and the award was truly an honor as there are lots of applications for it statewide.”

In addition, the foundation gave her a leather tote, a crystal apple trophy, business cards, a certificate and a one-year membership in the professional honorary Phi Delta Kappa International. In May, Perruso received Wal-Mart’s local teacher of the year award, which included a $1,000 donation to the school in her honor.

The foundation will announce its national TOY this month. Wal-Mart has given more than $5 million to schools in all 50 states and Puerto Rico this year through its teacher program.
