WW2 Soldiers Lead Veterans Day Parade

More than 50 marching units are expected for the Wahiawa Lions Club’s 61st annual Veterans Day Parade - the longest-running, continuous Veterans Day parade in the Islands - which starts at 10 a.m.Friday at Kaala Elementary School.

Grand marshals this year are Congressional Medal of Honor winners and World War II veterans Shizuya Hayashi of the 100th Infantry Battalion and Barney Hajiro of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Hayashi is from Waialua.


Playing under the parade’s theme of “We Have Not Forgotten"are four bands (so far): The Royal Hawaiian Band, Pacific Fleet Band, Leilehua and Waialua high school bands.New this year is a trophy in various categories for the Best Marching Unit. More than 1,000 individuals, 25 vehicles and six bands did the march last year.

The parade travels up California Avenue and concludes at Wahiawa District Park with an address from Rear Adm.James Beebe,Navy Reserve. A Leilehua graduate, Beebe is also director of the Submarine Reserve.

The program includes a flag-raising ceremony, a massing of the colors, and military equipment displays. For more information, call Jack Kampfer at 621-5109, ext. 226.


The Lions Club also invites the community to its fundraising breakfast this weekend. The 10th annual event is set for 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.Sunday in the Leilehua High School cafeteria. Proceeds defray the costs of the veterans parade, provide scholarships to Leilehua students, and support other club programs at area public schools.

On the menu are scrambled eggs, sausage, rice, biscuits, fresh pineapple and a beverage - all for $5 per person. For tickets, see any Lion or call Kampfer at the above number. They also will be sold at the door.
