August

* BUILDING HEARING The city Department of Planning and Permitting conducts a hearing at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 18 at Haleiwa Surf Center on a special management area use permit for a new three-story commercial building at 66-030 Kamehameha Hwy. in Kawailoa. The structure will have ground-level parking and two upper levels for commercial use. Call 768-8032.

* NEIGHBORS Mililani Mauka Neighborhood Board meets at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at Mililani Mauka Elementary School cafeteria. (The agenda includes the future of the Oahu Arts Center land); the North Shore board meets at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at Haleiwa Alii Beach Park, and MililaniWaipio-Melemanu meets at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at Mililani Rec Center 3. * BLOOD DRIVES Hawaii Blood Bank has donor drives from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21 and Sept. 5 at Mililani Town Center, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 24 at Mililani Tech Park. Call 845-9966.

* ADMISSION DAY All public schools and libraries are closed Aug. 21 in observance of Hawaii’s Admission Day.

* BON DANCE Mililani Hongwanji Buddhist Temple has its bon dance at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21-22 at 95-257 Kaloapau St. Call 625-0925.

* RAP CONCERT North Shore Christian Fellowship presents Christian rapper/hip hop artist Lecrae in a free concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at Waialua Community Association. WCA’s free film Kung Fu Panda has been moved to 7 p.m.Aug.28 (popcorn and drinks cost 50 cents each). Call 637-4606.

* STAR PARTY Hawaiian Astronomical Society hosts a public Star Party at sundown Aug. 22 at Dillngham Airfield, offering telescopes and special facts to share about the stars. Call 737-4742.

* GARDEN WALK Erin Purple leads a free tour of Wahiawa Botanical Garden at 9 a.m. Aug. 28, identifying plants and trees along the way. Call 621-5463 for reservations.

* RECYCLING Kaala Elementary School has a recycling drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.Aug. 29. Call 622-6366.

* DOG ADOPTIONS Hawaii Dog Foundation hosts a “meet and greet” from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 29 at Mililani Mauka Dog Park so prospective adoptive families can get to know foundation’s dogs. Call 782-8387.

* NIGHT WALKS Waimea Valley offers a walking tour at 6:30 p.m.Aug. 29 with Lopaka Kapanui sharing folklore and legends of the area. Fee is $50 for adults and $35 for children ages 12 to 16 (no keiki under 12 allowed). Call 638-7766.

* AMERICAN LEGION American Legion’s Mililani Post 56 meets at 7 p.m. Sept. 1 at National Guard Armory across from Wheeler Army Airfield to inaugurate its new meeting site.All Legionnaires are invited. Call 685-0434.

* HULA Kumu hula Ali’i Manu conducts non-competitive hula classes (auana, kahiko and the aloha spirit) at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at Mililani Uka Elementary School for men and women 15 and up. Call 478-2400.

* ART IN THE PARK Artists meet from 9 to 10 a.m. each Wednesday for self-directed drawing and painting at Wahiawa Botanical Garden. Call 621-5463.

* SURF CULTURE North Shore Surf and Cultural Museum is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day but Tuesday in the North Shore Marketplace. Call 637-8888.
