In its 19th round of self-help projects for public schools, Hawaii 3Rs is targeting 29 more campuses for repairs and remodeling this summer.

Five of those schools are in Central Oahu and will be scheduled for work over the summer break: Mililani High, Wheeler Middle and Iliahi, Mililani Waena and Sunset Beach elementary schools.

The agency had also scheduled Mililani High and Kanoelani Elementary for spring semester work. New executive director Ryan Shigetani said he was eager to work with 3Rs’ new partners, such as Environ Control Inc., which was to install Sentricon at a reduced rate at Kanoelani and Momilani elementary schools.

Shigetani had previously been coordinator of 3Rs projects, but employed by the state Department of Education.

The Hawaii 3Rs Initiative was established by U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye in 2001 to reduce the backlog of campus repairs through “sweat equity” and cooperative work days with parents, businesses and military volunteers.
