Mililani’s own Abunai 95 Soccer Team has returned from the mainland after winning the U-15 Premier Division National Cup Finals last month in Virginia.

They swept through the regional rounds in Seattle and then defeated national powerhouse Tap FC Barcelona out of Alexandria, Va., 2-0 in the title game.

“After the regionals we had about a month to train and prepare for the final round,” said Abunai 95 head coach Darrin Goo.

“Our mentality was to win the whole thing, and we were all very confident we could achieve that.”

Going into the final round, Abunai 95 held that confidence and composure even when role players were asked to step up. Goo said forward/defender Andrew Momahara had to fill in for an injured captain and did a great job, scoring the first goal in the championship game.

Many of the players have been teammates for nine straight years, starting when they were 7 years old.

Since most of them play for their high school teams now, Abunai 95 practices and trains outside of the scholastic soccer season, usually three to four days a week from February through October.
