A new Army ROTC cadet at the University of Hawaii has received the 2008 Nainoa Hoe Scholarship. Alexander Ladeira of Aiea accepted the $1,000 award Aug. 28 in a ceremony at Schofield Barracks.
The scholarship honors the service of 1st Lt. Nainoa Hoe, an infantry platoon leader from Hawaii who was killed Jan. 22, 2005, at age 27 by a sniper in Mosul, Iraq. He is buried at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery. The ceremony’s location - the U.S. Army’s Battle Command Training Center - is named after Hoe, a 1995 Kamehameha Schools graduate from Kailua.
The fund is endowed by local businessman Ohelo Kaopio, who presented the scholarship to Ladeira along with Hoe’s family, his commander in Iraq and other Army officials, including U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii commander Col. Matthew Margotta.
Ladeira, a 2008 Kamehameha Schools graduate, is studying business management at UHManoa. He is an Eagle Scout with academic honors from high school, a summer camp leader, and he has paddled in state canoe competitions.
“I’m humbled and honored to receive this award and excited to learn and grow,” he said, “and hopefully continue on the tradition of serving as an Army officer.”
