The World Series may be over, but Howard Oda baseball field at Wahiawa District Park is ready for action.
The city officially dedicated improvements to the field on Oct. 26 following the completion of new dugouts, bleachers and a batting cage. Capping it off was the presentation of a new scoreboard, a gift from Dura Constructors, in memory Oda, a Wahiawa resident, teacher, lawmaker, coach and author.
Oda, who died in 2006, gave all proceeds from his books to the Leilehua Athletic Fund. The fund in turn was used by the LHS baseball team to buy supplies and equipment for their home field at the park.
Mayor Mufi Hannemann called the scoreboard a “deserving tribute to a great community leader and coach.”
According to City Councilman Donovan Dela Cruz, who pushed for the improvements, it all brings Oda’s dreams to fruition and “completes his vision of how Fred Wright District Park could become an asset to the entire Wahiawa community.”
(The district park itself is named after Fred Wright, who was mayor of Honolulu from 1931-1938.)
