Hawaii Okinawa Center in Waipio Gentry has booked two special events this week for the public and the Okinawan community.
* A special screening of the documentary film Gaia Symphony No. 4 is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, offering insightful messages (in English) about Earth’s future in the 21st century. Featured are Hawaii big wave surfer Gerry Lopez, British biophysicist James Lovelock, chimpanzee researcher Jane Goodall and Japanese woodblock print artist Bokunen Naka. Admission is $10. Registration begins at 5:30 and doors open at 6. UH- Manoa also will screen the film Sunday in Japanese (11 a.m.) and in English (3 p.m.) in Spalding auditorium. For more information, call 738-3146.
* Storytelling and culture combine from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the center in “Chimugukuru: A Celebration of the Heart, Soul and Spirit of Hawaii’s Okinawan Community” featuring award-winning storyteller Alton Chung.
Now living in Oregon, Chung grew up in Hawaii, fascinated with true war stories as well as tales of ghosts and superstitions. From 1 to 3:30 p.m. he will perform historical skits of Okinawan courage and selflessness during WWII with Frances Nakachi in a program called “Nuchi du Takara.”
Cultural activities, refreshments and entertainment are planned from 3:30 to 6:45 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by Chung in “Obake Tales.”
Doors open at noon for general admission ($20) and reserved seats ($30). Tickets for only the Obake Tales show cost $5. Platinum seating is $100, which includes a guaranteed seat in the front section, a parking stall and a $70 tax deduction.
All proceeds benefit Hawaii United Okinawan Association and its capital campaign. For more information, call 676-5400.
