Waimea Valley Audubon Center presents a one-man art exhibit, Hawaii Kingdom of Surf, from noon to 8 p.m. Dec. 19 featuring the vivid paintings of Alfred Cababag.
Cababag, 48, has surfed since his youth in Waikiki and on the North Shore, and now at “secret places” near his home on the Big Island. The exhibit will have original paintings, giclee, matted prints, event posters, T-shirts and stickers in addition to a 20-foot canvas, Tutu, which has been 14 years in the making. Sales proceeds will go to Na Kahu (The Keepers), a group he formed on the Big Island to assist young surfers from the Waimea area.
Striving to “bring back the roots of surfing and reflect a culture that begs to be remembered,” Cababag also has done design work for Hilo Hattie and the Hui, and has sold many of his paintings to professional surfers.
The reception is free and includes food and drinks. For more information, call 349-7231.
