Camp Erdman Offering Summer Youth Programs

It’s summertime, school is out and everyone knows what that means: camp time!

Camp Erdman staff want families to know about several sessions they offer with different themes for youths ages 6 to 15 at the North Shore site between June 15 and Aug. 15. Surfing, skateboarding, rock climbing and creative arts are part of the mix.

“It’s just a wonderful opportunity for teens, no matter where they’re from to gain some cultural awareness,” said program director Roy Harriman Busenbark. “They also might discover something about themselves that they didn’t know.”

The newest is Hawaii Teen Experience, a partnership with the YMCA and Kiwanis International that has hiking, swimming and excursions to the Polynesian Cultural Center for ages 14-17.

“This is also an opportunity for teens from the Mainland and internationally to come and experience the Hawaii culture,” Busenbark added.

Fee is $1,200 for Hawaii residents and $1,300 for international or Mainland youths. (Other fees for airport pickup and drop-off, the camp store and a security deposit are not included.) Busenbark said he didn’t expect many local teens to enroll because of the early start of school. “I think we’ll get a few, but we run other things in the summer targeted for local people.”

The YMCA runs the nonprofit camp, which operates year-round for leadership training, corporate retreats and family camps. The camp has also been used for filming the hit TV series LOST. For more details, visit www.camperdman.net or call 637-4615.
