Residents and former students of Central Oahu schools continue to join the military service and achieve success in training and combat duties. Below is a partial listing of recent news about local servicemembers.

MEDALS Hawaii Army National Guard CWO Owen Takenaka (Leilehua ‘75) has received the Meritorious Service Medal for his role in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Owen is a support automotive maintenance officer with 32 years of service.

ADVANCED TRAINING Pvts. Robert John Javier (Waipahu ‘02) and Scott Abregano (Mililani ‘97) have graduated from the Army National Guard’s advanced light-wheeled vehicle mechanic training course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Tony Medeiros (Waipahu ‘95) has completed the Army’s light-wheeled vehicle advanced mechanics course at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Waipahu’s Sheldon Barbosa (Youth Challenge Academy ‘04) is now a fire protection specialist in the Air Force with the 47th Fighter Wing at Cannon AFB, N.M. Air Force Capt. Noel Omine (Mililani ‘85, UH ‘90, U. Phoenix ‘95 master’s) is currently deployed to Iraq. He’s an air evacuation operations officer regularly assigned to Hickam AFB. Dennis Batangan (Waipahu ‘96), a signals intelligence analyst with the Air Force, is currently at Fort Meade, Md. Anthony Barreras (Mililani ‘05), an aircraft structural maintenance craftsman, has arrived for duty at Barksdale AFB, La.

Larin Wong of Waipahu has graduated from the Air National Guard Academy of Military Science at McGhee Tyson ANG base in Tennessee and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. Larin is a pilot at Hickam AFB. Lia Gomes (Leilehua ‘93) has completed an Army National Guard unit supply specialist course at Fort Lee, Va.

BASIC TRAINING

Theo-Lamar Hina and James Dela Pena III (both Waialua ‘05), Kelly Ann Wert (Leilehua ‘05), Clifford Sistoso (Waialua ‘03), Jolly-Jack Nierva of Waipahu, Leilani Reyes (Mililani ‘02) and David Manalo (Waipahu ‘04) have completed Air Force training at Lackland AFB, Texas. Erica Mancini (Waipahu ‘05), Audrey Lei Agustin (Waipahu ‘04), Michael Gillespie of Mililani, James Nacario (Waialua ‘04) and Mary Grace Guiang (Leilehua ‘02) have graduated from Air National Guard training at Lackland AFB, Texas. Delilah Joung (Waipahu ‘05) has completed Army National Guard training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Jennifer Burson Pittman of Mililani and Kalani Kepoo (‘05 Waipahu Adult Community School) have finished Army basics at Fort Jackson. Bernadette Brillantes (Waipahu ‘03) has completed training with the Army Reserve at Fort Jackson. Jonathan Ganal (Waipahu ‘01) and Ivan Momoki (Waipahu Adult Community School ‘03) have completed Army Reserve training and reported to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
