Check Out The Art At Waialua Library Show

Del.icio.usThe Friends of Waialua Library are featuring the creations of nine local artists now through Oct. 30 at the library.
Photographers Nicholas Lennon and Amy Froemsdorf are making their artistic debut at the library, as is Rick Johann, who creates abstract flowers and other scenes out of color pencils and watercolors. Jeweler Luciane Hutter said she is a self-taught artist who got all her how-to books on silver, gemstones and silver clay jewelry from the Waialua Library.
Lenny Laigo and Joseph Sardinha paint seascapes. Author and Honolulu Star-Bulletin columnist Susan Scott showcases her marine debris art using colored bottle caps to create a turtle or beach debris to make a statue of a person. Heidi Lenz is well-versed in many art mediums, and she has her oils, pastels and acrylics on display. Floria Bol offers her series of oil paintings of women sitting in front of Waialua landmarks, such as the sugar mill and library. An opening reception last Thursday kicked off the show.
This is the first time Joyce Hawkins-Alehandro has served as the art coordinator for the show, though she’s been a member of the Waialua Friends since its inception. “I love art,” she explained. “People say I’m creative, but I don’t think so. I enjoy other people’s art, so I encourage them to do it.”
A 10-percent portion of the proceeds from art sales goes to the library to buy more books. The Friends, with a membership roster 400-strong, sponsor the show for adult artists each August, an elementary school exhibit in October, and a high school art show in May.
