Church Permits Nearly Ready

Del.icio.usMililani Community Church has a lot to be thankful for, and now with help from the city and local foundations, it will add one more reason to that list.
The church recently submitted an application to the Department of Planning and Permitting for a Conditional Use Permit-Minor to establish a permanent church building equipped with elder-and child-care facilities in Mililani Mauka. The application was accepted on Sept. 1.
“In order to build anything, particularly a church on residential property, you’ve got to have two types of permits,” said Warren Nakamura, chief architect for the project. “We’ve finally got it (CUP-minor) to a point where we’re close to getting it approved, and we should hear back no later than Dec. 15. The next step would go toward getting the actual building permit, and once that is done we can get started and break ground.
“We’re hoping everything can be done within the year, and our goal is to start building prior to next summer. By the summer of 2011 we hope to be finished.”
MCC meets at Mililani Waena Elementary School, which it’s occupied on Sunday mornings for years. Most of its 165-plus members are permanent and longtime residents of Mililani.
“We’re thankful that we now have a property and can have a permanent location,” said Pastor Rick Bartosik. “Our church has been in existence for 29 years now, and we just want a place to call our permanent home.”
It was founded in 1980, and Bartosik has been its pastor since 1995 - after previous assignments as senior chaplain of Hawaii’s prison system (14 years) and dean of International College and Graduate School in Honolulu (now called Hawaii Theological Seminary).
“I joke that I was in and out of prison for 14 years, decided to clean up my act and go to college, and now I’m a pastor,” he said.
“We’re thrilled that we have the property and are so thankful that the Lord has given it to us,“Bartosik added.
