City Contracts For Pupukea Rock Fall Fix

Del.icio.usNumerous rock falls over the years along Pupukea Road have moved the public to propose a project to mitigate such falls, as reported at a recent North Shore Neighborhood Board meeting.
Bids were opened in May, and construction should begin before the end of the year, if all permits are obtained.
“The city is in the process of awarding the contract,” said Craig Nishimura, director of design and construction. “Details on road closures will not be available until the contract is awarded and after the city has the opportunity to meet with the contractor.”
Requirements limit the project to 150 days, during which crews will cover about 930 feet of the road, including the area in back of 59-230 Alapio Road (Water Reservoir Gully) to the area behind 59-208 Alapio Road.
The city CIP project takes a proactive approach to protect travelers along Pupukea Road. Plans call for the placement of a net-like drapery over loose rocks and the installation of a fence to prevent larger ones from falling on the road and other areas below. The netting will allow vegetation to grow over and through the spaces, eventually hiding the net itself, while still providing protection to commuters.
The last reported rockfall incident in the area was during a heavy rain storm on Dec. 31, 2007, which blocked part of the road.
