Pet owners can support a local service dog agency Saturday while getting their pets’ teeth cleaned.

Hawaii Fi-Do Service Therapy Dogs sponsors a unique hygiene service for dogs and cats from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. by appointment at its Sunset Beach training facility. Fee is $100, and one-fourth of the proceeds go to the non-profit North Shore group.For an appointment, call 221-5698. Discounts for multiple pets are available.

“Tooth decay leads to gum disease in dogs,“explained Judy Suan of Hawaii Fi-Do.“Having a cleaning once a year helps to get rid of plaque much in the same way that we visit the dentist.”

No anesthesia will be used during the procedure, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Suan said that Scott Blanchard developed this technique after his girlfriend had a dog who died while under anesthesia. Blanchard also donated a portion of his fee to Hawaii Fi-Do last year. A second session will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at a Kailua home. He will perform another cleaning service in three months.
