Curbside Now Expanding To North Shore

Del.icio.usCurbside recycling has expanded further into Central Oahu. While Mililani is a leading pilot program from October of last year, thousands more households from Mokuleia to Sunset Beach will join the service this month.
Many homes have already received the city’s green waste bins, and the mixed-recyclable blue bins already have been delivered to some residents. Blue bins deliveries will continue throughout November.
Rubbish collection will remain twice weekly along with the added recycling pickup, but starting Jan. 12, the second rubbish pickup will be eliminated, and recyclables will be collected once a week alternating between mixed recyclables and green waste.
The blue bins are for mixed recyclables like cardboard, bottles and cans, while the green bins are for green waste, such as yard trimmings. Information will be attached to the bins.
“How we manage our Island’s waste will affect generations to come,” said Mayor Mufi Hannemann. “This new curbside recycling program will divert thousands of tons from our landfill, but it means changing how we manage our household waste.”
Once the program goes islandwide, the city estimates it can collect 80,000 tons of green waste and 40,000 tons of recyclables annually.
The expanded roll-out is set to continue throughout the rest of Oahu every six months until November 2010. For more, visit http://www.opala.org.
