The arrival of winter swells on Oahu’s North Shore signals the arrival of the 24th annual Triple Crown of Surfing, set for this Sunday through Dec. 20.

In that spirit, the Hawaii premiere of the surf movie Peel: the Peru Project will be shown at 7 and 9 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 9) at Haleiwa Gym.Admission is $5, and proceeds will support the Waialua Community Association and the Oahu chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. For more information, call 637-4606.

T.J. Barrack and Wes Brown (his grandfather Bruce Brown directed The Endless Summer) filmed the show entirely in Peru, where they hit the road in search of culture and sweet surf spots with surfers like Mark Healey, Jesse Colombo, Peru’s seven-time national champion Magoo de la Rosa, accompanied by the music of Surfact.

More entertainment is in store this weekend with feature films, live music, food booths, crafts and an interactive keiki area at the Op Pro North Shore Makahiki Festival at Haleiwa Beach Park, on the Sunset Beach side of Rainbow Bridge. (Op is the title sponsor of the Op Pro Hawaii, the first contest in the Triple Crown.)

Hawaii surfers competing in this year’s Triple Crown include returning champ Andy Irons, Pancho Sullivan and Carissa Moore.Joining the competition for the first time is Coco Ho, a daughter of former Triple Crown champion Michael Ho.
